First Pretrial Hearing In The Federal Vioxx Liability Case
Lawyers by the dozens filed into a New Orleans courtroom Friday for the first pre-trial hearing in the federal Vioxx liability case the beginning of a legal process that could take years.
U.S. District Court Judge Eldon Fallon of the Eastern District of Louisiana has been assigned to coordinate the array of lawsuits filed over Vioxx, which was withdrawn from the U.S. market last fall over concerns about the drug's cardiovascular safety.
Analysts' estimates of Merck & Co.'s potential liability in the Vioxx cases range from $4 billion to $30 billion, the Associated Press reported.
Some 1,350 product liability lawsuits had been filed against Merck as of March 9, the wire service said.
